Es un entrenamiento de dos equipos caninos de nuestra Asociación Intervención, Ayuda y Emergencias en nuestro campo de prácticas de Algemesí, Valencia, el Agosto pasado.

Se trabajan temas muy específicos con idea de "probar" a los guías. Es muy grande, pero es que hay casi 20 minutos de entrenamiento. También hemos dejado el audio, preferimos dejarlo tal y como estaba porque es más real que hacerlo tipo montaje y así se ve y escucha todo.

Paso a los ejercicios, hay cinco:

1) El primero es un ejercicio de Balto (yo soy la guía) en el que debe encontrar a 4 víctimas. Se trabajaba la organización de la búsqueda por parte del guía (que lo necesita mucho, jeje) para registrar toda la zona. Había que revisar todo, incluso zonas donde había bastante gente sentada. Y por supuesto, que el perro, una vez localizada cada víctima, debía continuar a por otra víctima obviando la anterior - sin recompensar hasta el final-.

2) En el segundo ejercicio está Kraus, cuyo guía es Juan Burgos. Se trabajó la búsqueda de dos víctimas. Costó mucho la señalización en la segunda por cuestiones de accesibilidad y corrientes. Es un ejercicio muy curioso de ver y escuchar los comentarios.

Entre estos dos perros se observa claramente las ventajas de la juventud de uno (Kraus), frente a las del mayor, pero más experimentado (Balto).

3) Tercer ejercicio: el título lo dice todo "Discrminación de olores. Foco residual y foco caliente". En este ejercicio el guía (Juan) ignoraba lo que tramábamos. Se había colocado una víctima en un zulo vertical, bien tapado y justo en la tapa pusimos una camiseta empapadita de sudor de otra persona. El perro debía ser capaz de reconocer ambos olores, discriminar el residual (camiseta) y señalizar el foco caliente (la víctima). Aquí hay varias cosas interesantes: en un momento dado el perro aparece con un mordedor en la boca (aunque continúa trabajando) y el guía le lanza un rotundo ¡NO!. El perro escupe el mordedor y continúa la búsqueda.
Luego ocurre lo previsto: el perro discrimina ambos olores, acude en más de una ocasión al lugar pero no resuelve. Llega un momento en el que vuelve al lugar donde está la víctima y mira al guía en busca de apoyo porque claramente tiene un conflicto. El guía evita cualquier apoyo ahí. Pero un auxiliar, aprovechando un momento en el que el perro no está cerca, retira la prenda sudada para facilitar las cosas al perro. Tratamos de que aprenda a diferenciar esos dos olores. El perro regresa y señaliza ya sin ningún problema.

4) Ejercicio de Balto: se trataba de localizar a una víctima que estaba escondida en un frigorífico, con emanación mínima de olor y además queríamos trabajar las distracciones de gente a su alrededor hablando, silbando, trabajando... sobre todo cuando llega el momento de la localización y señalización. Durante el ejercicio se oye algún silbido y alguien llamando a voces, algo muy típico durante la intervención y que podría distraernos al perro. Y en el momento de la localización y señalización, varias personas molestan al perro mientras trabaja con intención de distraerle o llevársele del lugar. Y su guía (yo) también contribuye al lío intentando llevárselo con llamadas (no órdenes) para incitarlo a seguirla (algo que es fácil que mañana nos ocurra en situación real).
En este ejercicio se ve una cosa muy curiosa: en el minuto 15, cuando el perro llega al zulo del ejercicio anterior (el de los residuales), se le puede ver claramente venteando los olores que debieron quedar.


5) Este quinto y último ejercicio es la repetición del problema de residuales de Kraus para comprobar si aprendió en el primero. Mismo zulo, misma situación y con la camiseta en la misma tapa de la víctima. El perro resolvió correctamente.

I would like to explain the exercises we were working there. If you understand Spanish you'll find an interesting -and real- audio:

We are working in a training camp which belongs to our Association and which isn't near to us, so when we go there we profit to prepare and train difficult exercises. It was last August.

In that training, we work specific exercises in order to "prove" the handlers. There are five exercises:

1) The first one is an exercise for me and my GSD Balto. We needed to find four victims. There we wanted to work my ability when organizing my search (something I need to improve!) in order to check all the area. We need to check everything, including tunnels under a big group of people. And also, when we found one victim, the dog was sent to look for another one without reward.

2) In this second exercise worked Kraus and his handler Juan Burgos. They had to find two victims. The second one was a very difficult one because of air currents and accesibility and it takes some time and a big effort from the dog to get to the bark. This is a very interesting exercise: watch and listen to the people around.
Between these two dogs, you can easily notice the adavantages of the younger (Kraus) and also the advantages of the older (Balto). While the younger has a great mobility, sometimes it's too fast to concentrate on certain problems and needs the experience to solve situations like this one.

3) This exercise was a difficult one. The title says: "Scent discrimination. Residual scent and hot scent". In this exercise, the handler (Juan) ignores what we planned for them. We put someone into a pipe and just upon the lid, we put a sweated skirt from another person. The dog must identify the two scents, discriminate the residual -skirt- and allert on the hot spot -the victim-. Here we find some interesting situations: there is a moment the dog, while searching, comes out with a tug in his mouth -but it's still searching-. The handler shouts NO! and the dog literally spits it and continues the search with no problem.
And then comes the problem: the dog discriminates both scents. He goes several times to the place where the victim and the skirt are but he abandonnes again evidently confused. Then, he goes back to the spot and then look at the handler, looking for help. The handler doesn't move, doesn't say a word. The dog leaves again and, at this moment, an auxiliar (me) removes the skirt in order to show the dog the correct scent without the residual and get an allert. The dog goes back and this time he recognizes the scent and barks.

4) Another exercise for Balto: we need to find someone who was hidden in a fridge with a minimum scent coming out. There was no wind so it was going to be very difficult. We also wanted to work distractions like people around the area: talking, whistling, working... mainly when the dog locates and barks. During this exercise you can hear someone whistling and shouting, something quite usual in deployments and something which could distract our dogs. When the dog finally finds the victim, some people walks to and fro, bothering him and trying him to abandon the spot. And I'm also adding difficulties for the poor dog. I call him -no commands- sweetly, urging him to come with me. But the dog must remain in his place barking.
In this exercise -minute 15-, there's a curious moment when the dog reaches the spot where the previous victim -and that skirt- were. The lid is opened and you can easily watch the dog airscenting the residual scents.

5) This last exercise is the repetition of that residual scent discrimination for Kraus to see if he had learned with the first one. Everything was the same: victim, spot, skirt in the same place. The dog solved the problem.
